How is Hilary Belmont?

We began by partnering with a SIFE team in Guatemala city on one of their projects. They took us to a foster home in Jalapa, Guatemala for formerly abused little girls. The home is well run and clean, but the nuns directing it have no source of income to provide food, books, etc for the girls. The girls started making bracelets and selling them in Guatemala city. We came along and joined the project by opening up a market for the bracelets in the US. The idea is to have American Catholic school children making a difference in the lives of Guatemalan Catholic school children. Belmont Professor, Dr. Jose Gonzalez then connected me with the principal of St. Ann’s Middle School, John Foreman. I began working with 4 of their seventh graders on a bracelet campaign. The kids have taken the project on by storm. In the first week they made over $560 in bracelet sales! We’ll see how much they can make before the end of the school year and send it back to the girls at the “Mary and Martha” foster home. St. Ann’s is also pitching the project to other schools in the area, hopefully making this a sustainable project in the future.
